A ballet of light dances on the flaring, trumpet-shaped spathes of these Calla Lilies as they open themselves to reveal the true flower arising from within.  “Calla” comes from the Greek word for beautiful.  Even though this plant is not a true calla, or even a lily, the name is fitting for its glorious beauty.

Native to southern Africa, Calla lilies grow from tubular rhizomes that thrive when rooted in the right environment.  Given warmth and moist soil, the rhizomes multiply, producing abundant new plants each season!  Amazingly, in southern Africa they are considered weeds and people try to rid the land of them.  They were introduced to Europe in the 1600s when Karl XII, King of Sweden, brought them back from Persia.  Quickly they came to represent magnificent beauty and were treasured by cultures around the world.

Psalm 27:4
“One thing I ask of the LORD,
This is what I seek:
That I may dwell in the house of the LORD
All the days of my life,
To gaze upon the beauty of the LORD
And to seek Him in His temple.”
